iPod foils potential kidnapping attempt in the hands of quick-thinking child

Apple's iPod touch can't make cellular calls -- at least, not without a special case -- but it did look enough like the similar iPhone to foil one would-be predator. A Delaware suspect asked a 12-year-old girl to get into his van in front of her middle school, but quickly fled the scene, when the girl reportedly put her iPod against her ear and told him she was dialing police. The local authorities did eventually get called and are still looking for the suspect. If you see a "white male, 35-45 years of age, with a dark crew cut styled hair" suspiciously eying the headphone jack placement on devices in your local Apple Store, perhaps you'd best stay away.

Google Chrome to add option for custom DNS servers

Google Chrome's (and Chromium's) about:flags page is becoming quite the playground for intrepid feature testers. In a recent Chromium snapshot build, another handy new feature has appeared: user-specified DNS servers.

Being able to specify custom servers right in the browser might not be a big deal on other operating systems -- where you can already do that in your network settings. On Chrome OS, however, it could provide an easy way for parents to lock their child's netbook into the OpenDNS FamilyShield in order to block inappropriate content (for example).

I'm sure there are other applications for this as well -- testing, for example. Want to run GoogleDNS in Canary against your ISP's servers in Chromium to see how they perform side-by-side? Go for it!

...Or maybe your favorite site won't load, or an outdated copy of a page you're working on keeps loading when you refresh (I'm looking at you, MTS). If it's your DNS servers at fault, you could quickly pop a new server into Chrome, reload, and off you go.

Sure, you could achieve the same result using a proxy server, but why bother if the functionality is built right into your browser?

Wake up the Box 2 is a cute physics Time-Waster

wakeupthebox2

In Wake up the Box 2, the object of the game is to ... wake up the box! Yup, there's a box, and it's asleep. And as soon as something jars it hard enough, it wakes up, and you get to move on to the next level.

Each level is a tiny physics playing field. You get a piece of wood (or sometimes two or three, but always in a set sequence), and you can then connect that piece of wood to other pieces of wood that are already shown on the level. This causes all sorts of actions to occur. For example, things can become lopsided and tip over.

Pretty soon, though, other forces come into play. Balls start rolling and impacting against your creations, and there's an unnamed substance (which looks like iron) that makes wood vanish on touch. That's important, because you can have a ball that's made of the stuff roll onto a piece of wood and make it disappear at just the right time.

The game starts off very easy, but around level eight it becomes more challenging. Go ahead, give it a try!

Get Ready to Kiss IPv4 Goodbye: Q&A With ICSA Labs' Guy Snyder, Part 2

The drive to IPv6, the newer Internet communications protocol, appears to be driven by major networking vendors. Their contention is that we're running out of IPv4 network addresses. They've got the Obama administration behind them, and the White House is pushing to have all federal departments and agencies enable the use of native IPv6 by the end of 2012.

Alltel HTC Wildfire

When HTC recently announced that the mid-range Wildfire would be coming to the United States after its run in Europe, we didn't know any of the regional carriers involved. Turns out that Alltel -- what's left of it anyway, was first out the gate with what's been previously codenamed the HTC Bee.

Join us after the break for a mini review of the 3.2-inch HTC Widlfire, available now for $29.99 on two-year contract.
