Insidia is a dark-yet-forgiving platformer -- Time Waster

insidia
So you're an alien, tooling around in free space in your little spaceship... when suddenly, disaster strikes! Your craft is hit by a meteor, and you're forced to crash-land on an unfamiliar, dark planet.

That's where Insidia starts off. Now that you're on the planet, you have to navigate its complex maze of rooms and corridors in search of repair kits for your craft. Once you find all ten repair kits, you'd be able to leave the planet (and win the game).

Unlike many other platformers, Insidia is not linear. As you progress through the game, you reveal more and more passages and rooms, but you also go through some places more than once. When you hit M you get a nice map that shows everywhere you've been so far and gives you a sense of how much is still to be explored.

As you walk around, you find items that improve your abilities (a double-jump power-up, for example). And when something kills you, you just respawn at the last "save point", with all of your items and abilities intact. I love that, because it means dying is not a big deal - it's just a part of the game, and it doesn't make you feel like you're failing.

All in all, this is a platformer I could certainly spend some time with.

AV-Test year-end report shows exponential growth of malware

Now, we don't need fancy graphs to tell us that malware is all over the place -- but it's certainly eye-opening to see just how bad the problem has gotten. Unique samples gathered by AV-Test Labs this year nearly doubled in 2010 -- to almost 20 million, up from 12 million in 2009. That's no doubt due to the ever-morphing horde of rogue applications, which now include bogus system tune-up software in addition to the traditional fake antivirus programs we have come to despise.

Thankfully, security vendors have really stepped up their game in the last two years. Clearly they're going to need to keep churning out smarter, more adaptive, and just plain better apps to keep users protected.

Those of you who want to read the full report can download the Excel sheet, courtesy Sunbelt Software.

AnyLeaf Aggregates And Delivers Personalized Grocery Store Deals

For decades, my mother and grandmother have both religiously scanned the weekly coupon books and circulars that arrive in the weekend newspaper. While clipping coupons can be tedious, grocery stores' weekly deals can often take out a significant chunk of change of the weekly food bill. Of course, as print couponing becomes obsolete, many consumers are looking to the web for deals at their local grocery stores. Today, Y Combinator-backed AnyLeaf is launching its intelligent grocery deal aggregator to the public. AnyLeaf scours local grocery store sites in the San Francisco Bay area and aggregates all the deals from these stores, including CVS, Lucky, Nob Hill, Raley's, Safeway, Target, and Walgreens. You simply enter your zipcode and email address, and AnyLeaf will send you a weekly email with deals from the local grocery stores near you.

How to change the screen time-out on Android

android
This week's tips series was all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

Earlier today, I was helping my brother set up his new Motorola Defy. While the phone itself was quite nice (and tough), the screen kept turning off after just a few seconds of idle time. It was starting to drive us crazy, but after quickly poking through the settings we fixed it. Here's how:

1) Go to Settings > Display

2) Tap Screen timeout

3) Tap the timeout value you wish to use

Of course there's a trade-off between convenience and battery life - having the screen time out after two whole minutes can be nice, but your battery may not last very long. And while you're here, you can also easily adjust your display's brightness.

This tip wraps up this week's Tips series. What would you like to see next week? Let me know in the comments!

Mark Zuckerberg meets the fake Mark Zuckerbergs on Saturday Night Live (video)

Mark Zuckerberg, the man who invented poking and the subject of a major motion picture in 2010 just met his nemeses on the set of Saturday Night Live. No, not the Winklevoss twins, we're talking Jesse Eisenberg, the man nominated for an Academy Award after playing Zuckerberg in The Social Network. Toss in Andy Samberg and we've got a comically uncomfortable situation from Web 2.0's very personification of awkward. All hail the Zuck Bergs!

Microsoft readying official Kinect SDK for Windows

Microsoft, according to (you guessed it!) sources familiar with its plans, is preparing to release the official Kinect SDK for Windows. This follows the release of the official Windows drivers last month from Microsoft Kinect's manufacturer, PrimeSense.

The release of an official SDK doesn't have immediate repercussions, but it does strongly hint at a gesture-controlled future for Windows 8. With over 8 million Kinects sold in just 60 days, and with Windows' almost complete penetration of the consumer market, there's a big potential market for Windows software that can utilize Kinect -- and, who knows, by the time Windows 8 rolls around in 2012 or 2013, maybe every household will already have a Kinect just waiting to be plugged in.

If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the Kinect-powered Minority Reportesque user interface. With this SDK, it could be just a matter of weeks before similar software appears for Windows, in the form of an easy-to-install MSI.

Facebook temporarily removes developer access to your home address and mobile number

Facebook, after a quiet announcement of the new home address and mobile phone access permissions, has made a quick about-turn. Citing some "useful feedback," Facebook has decided to to make changes "to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so."

The feature, which will be re-enabled in a few weeks, will allow Facebook app developers to request both your home address and mobile phone number. The changes being made will hopefully involve a bold, explicit warning in the Request for Permission boxes -- the boxes that you click through to use a new app -- but hopefully there are some better solutions on the table, too.

Ideally, Facebook would give us the option of securing your details permanently, from your Privacy Settings page. There should be a check box that simply says "never give my home address out" -- but that might be a little too hopeful.

How?d Sequoia Let Yuri Milner Grab this Sweetheart Y Combinator Deal?

Earlier tonight, Mike posted a bombshell that must have made super angels shudder. Not content with the grenade he threw into the late-stage investing world with aggressive investments in Facebook, Groupon and Zynga, tonight Yuri Milner announced a new partnership with Ron Conway that offers similar you'd-be-crazy-not-to-take-this-deal terms for every Y Combinator company. But you know who might be even more bummed by the news than the super angels? Sequoia Capital. The top Valley firm led Y Combinator's last funding, less than one year ago. At $8.5 million, this was a big step up for Y Combinator, dramatically allowing it to expand how many startups it could let into its incubator. And it should have been a big advantage for Sequoia too: A way to see a crop of new deals early in an increasingly competitive investing landscape, where most VCs are being shut out of early rounds by super angels. It seems Milner stole the opportunity right out from under Sequoia.

Kongregate Arcade pulled from the Android Market for violating terms

While it might be packed with casual gaming fun, Kongregate Arcade for Android also violates Google's terms and conditions for distributing apps in the Android Market. Our brothers at Joystiq got word that Arcade was pulled because an app isn't allowed to distribute other apps. Sure, the game devs could repackage their Flash games and post them to the Market individually, but Kongregate's one-stop solution just didn't pass muster with Google.

You can still download Kongregate Arcade from the source. You'll need to flip the Unknown sources switch on your Android device under Settings > Applications, then download the .APK.

Berzerk Ball is a nerd-flinging Time Waster

berzerkball
What you see in the screenshot above is a geek hurtling through the edge of space, so fast and so high that it looks as though he's re-entering the atmosphere on his way back to earth. That shot, by the way, ended up being around the 30,000' mark.

And yes, that's what you do on Berzerk Ball. The protagonist is a very pretty lady with a very large bat, and her job is to fling geeks as high and far into space as humanly possible.

And when I say "geeks" I mean "a geek", really, because it appears to be the same one over and over again - once he lands, he just starts walking back, muttering inane comments culled from actual blogs along the way.

Basic controls are elementary: You just click the mouse twice - once for controlling the angle, and again for controlling the power of the shot. Once the geek is airborne, you can exert a bit of influence over his trajectory using the left and right arrow keys. That may come in handy, because there are power-ups you can collect along the way, and robots you can land on (who then toss you ever farther on your merry way).

As you get better you can level up and buy different bats and power-ups to fling your geek ever farther. I'm not sure how long this game can stay interesting, but it might keep you amused during a phone call with a particularly irritating nerd.

Fantastic Plastic, Part 1: Polymers in Computing

Not all polymers are plastics, but all plastics are polymers. And organic polymer plastics, known mostly for being insulators, in some cases make excellent conductors and semiconductors. The term "all-polymer semiconductor" sounds almost like an oxymoron. Plastic is generally considered a poor medium for conducting electricity and an excellent material to resist the flow of electric current and magnetism.
