Radeon HD 6990 pictured, GeForce GTX 590 rumored for PAX East 2011 reveal

Multiple cores are old hat, particularly in the GPU world where you can have hundreds of simultaneous processing units working in concert, but multiple GPUs on the same PCB, that's still exciting territory (not least because of the crazy thermal and power requirements that go with it). AMD and NVIDIA are set to clash horns on this field of battle once again, fishing for mindshare as much as they are for high premium sales, with the Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590, respectively. The former has already slipped out of the shadows of mystery to reveal a size slightly longer than an A4 sheet of paper, while the latter is being rumored for an unveiling at the PAX East 2011 gamer gathering. Expected GTX 590 specs include 1024 total CUDA cores, 3GB of onboard RAM with dual 384-bit memory controllers, and three DVI outputs for some single-card 3D Vision Surround gaming. This year's PAX East is kicking off on March 11th and AMD is also looking very close to launching its part, so you should need no more than a couple of weeks' worth of patience before everything about the latest and greatest from both camps is known.

AT&T will start selling Kindle 3G e-reader in its retail stores from March 6th

AT&T is adding the first e-reader to its catalog of connected devices and, unsurprisingly, it's the 3G version of Amazon's latest-generation Kindle. There's nothing peculiar about this agreement, the 3G Kindle will cost $189, the same as it does on Amazon's online portal, and there are no special content or add-on deals in place. It's just another locale where you'll be able to "test drive" and purchase Amazon's all-time best-selling product. Stock should be arriving shortly for a March 6th launch, though if you're looking for the WiFi-only Kindle, you'll have to look elsewhere, AT&T will only be selling the 3G-equipped 6-incher.

SpellBook Google Chrome extension adds right-click access to bookmarklets

google chrome bookmarklet context spellbook
We're big users of right-click context menus, especially in our Web browsers. We also love bookmarklets -- those handy little JavaScript snippets that sit next to our normal bookmarks and provide extension-like functionality. Combine these two things, and you've got SpellBook, a new Google Chrome extension that provides right-click access to all your bookmarklets.

Just install SpellBook and use Chrome's bookmark manager to drop your bookmarklets into the folder the extension creates. Now when you want to fire up you favorite marklet, you can simply click your right mouse button, hover over SpellBook, and then click the one you want to execute. The extension also adds two-click access to the Chrome bookmark manager.

Looking for some handy bookmarklets to install, too? Check out our list of favorites -- and remember, they'll work in practically any Web browser!

Firefox 4's best restartless add-ons

Unless you've been sleeping under a rock, or in a tent outside the Googleplex with an "I LOVE SCHMIDT" banner, you hopefully know that Firefox 4 supports restartless add-ons, or in developerese: bootstrapped extensions.

Unfortunately, however, the process of converting an existing add-on into a restartless wonder is far from simple. A few months ago, back when the Firefox 4 beta machine really got into the swing of things, the developer of the world's most popular add-on, Adblock Plus, described his laborious and infuriating attempt at making his add-on restartless -- and today, just a few days away from the final Firefox beta, there still isn't a single big-name restartless add-on to be found.

On the flip side, writing new restartless add-ons is a little easier. Uptake amongst developers still seems to be very slow, though. Add-ons for Firefox (AMO) only has about 80 add-ons tagged with 'restartless', and even less with the restartless add-on's SDK, 'jetpack'.

Then, of course, only a few of those add-ons are actually worth using! Read on for our pick of the best Firefox 4 restartless add-ons.

You Rock strums its way into Rock Band 3 Pro mode

Those seeking the upper echelons of virtual guitar wizardry have a third option now -- the You Rock Guitar, which is now compatible with Rock Band 3's Pro mode. So long as you've also got Mad Catz' MIDI-Pro adapter handy, the multi-touch fret board sounds like a solid middle ground between the uber-realistic Squier Stratocaster strings and the tiny toy-like fret keys of the Mustang Pro, and at roughly $200 street it's priced right between the others as well. PR after the break, and find our early impressions of the You Rock here.

Under Armour's E39 performance shirt is electric (video)

If athletic events were accessorized with coffee, comfy pajamas, and a particular knack for sedentariness, well, we'd be champs. Alas, sports are more typically characterized by movement which, we're told, increases the participant's pulse, breathing, and likelihood of turning an arm into a tattooed sleeve. Nevertheless, we can't help but be intrigued by the Under Armour E39 ("E" for electric) compression shirt. The performance tee features a removable "bug" sensor equipped with a triaxial accelerometer, processor, and 2GB of storage flanked by additional monitors that measure the wearer's heart rate and breathing. A system provided by Zephyr can then analyze the athlete's individual movements and biometric data to help identify performance issues like when the body is moving out of sync thereby slowing down an athlete's linear speed. Scouts, coaches, and trainers can collect the data over Bluetooth from smartphones, tablets, or PCs to measure and potentially improve performance. An athlete measuring a low G-force for their particular sport could, for example, be put on a strength training regimen to help improve explosiveness. In the future, Under Armour sees the data being collected and analyzed in real-time allowing coaches to replace under performing players right on the field. The NFL has already equipped a handful of players with the E39 shirts during its annual Scouting Combine event -- the results of which you can see in the video after the break.

PhotoRocket Lifts Off. Mission: Super Easy Photo Sharing. Destination: Everywhere.

A couple of months ago, an SEC filing unveiled that Scott Lipsky, one of Amazon?s first executives ever and later founder of aQuantive (acquired by Microsoft for a cool $6 billion in 2007) was up to something new. His new startup, PhotoRocket, is all about ridiculously easy photo sharing from multiple devices, and it will be formally introducing its service at the DEMO conference later today. I had a chat with Lipsky and PhotoRocket CEO (and former VP at Yahoo) Gary Roshak ahead of the launch presentation, and came impressed with the product and its potential.

Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo coming 'in a few weeks'

firefoxJay Sullivan, Mozilla's vice president of products, has told the IDG News Service at the Mobile World Congress that Firefox 4 for Android will ship in a few weeks. We should expect to see one more beta version this week, and then the final build soon after.

Sullivan also tells IDG about Firefox for Mobile's extensive feature set -- 150 add-ons will be available! -- and Mozilla's overall move to a faster, quarterly release cycle.

Android already has a lot of competent browsers, but an HTML5-rendering, hardware-accelerated and sync-enabled offering would blow the rest of the competition out of the water.

CorelDraw video tutorial: Pulling in photos and clip art from the Web

corelconnect
This is the fourth (and final) of our CorelDRAW video tutorials. You can watch the others by browsing the CorelDRAW tag.

When creating a vector image or a composition, you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. After all, it is more than likely that whatever it is you're trying to do has been done before, at least in part. Using existing images or clip art ("media assets" in business parlance) can greatly speed up your work, and even improve the overall look of the image you produce.

To this end, I've chosen to create a video showing Corel Connect. It's a media search engine that comes with CorelDRAW, and helps you pull in images from Flickr, Fotolia, iStockphoto, and of course, your local hard drive and CorelDRAW's own clip art repositories.

Corel Connect ties in very tightly with CorelDRAW itself, and also does a nice job of protecting the original creator's rights so you don't "forget" to license whatever content you're using. See for yourself after the jump!

Mozilla F1 adds bit.ly account support, improves security

firefox 4 f1 sharing
After having just received a slimmer, vertical interface, the F1 sharing add-on for Firefox 4 has received another minor bump from the team at Mozilla Messaging. This time, F1 has added support for bit.ly accounts -- enabling you to track statistics for your shares alongside your other bit.ly links.

F1 also now offers better security out-of-the-box by storing OAuth information in the browser. Autocomplete has also been improved, and Linux users should now be able to utilize the dropdowns in F1 -- which is kind of important if you want to post to a group Facebook wall or send a direct message on Twitter.

Has Ubuntu Linux Lost Its Luster?

For those of us who love Ubuntu, it was both distressing and perplexing to read Bruce Byfield's recent blog post entitled, "Ubuntu: Where Did the Love Go?" Growing concerns and criticisms about Ubuntu's relationship with the open source community at large are Byfield's focus. Chief among them "the gap between the expectations created by Ubuntu and Canonical in their early days and their increasing tendency to focus on commercial concerns."
